File this under “stupid liberal policies.” A Kentucky Waffle House would not serve an Army National Guard soldier, in uniform, because he carried a sidearm.
Billy Welch told WLEX-TV that he stopped at the Waffle House in Nicholasville Sunday morning to eat some breakfast. After ordering, he said he was summoned by a waitress.
“I got up and I walked over to them, asked them how they were doing and stuff, and they said I’d have to take my firearm outside,” Welch said. “I don’t feel comfortable taking my firearm away from me. I always keep it with me and they said, ‘it’s one of our policies.”
For Welch, it is more than just a policy, it’s a court-martial offense. Soldiers who lose their firearms are subject to discipline under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, article 108.
“You know, if I can’t have my firearm, then I can’t be here,” said Welch. “I walked inside to the other waitress. I said, ‘thank you, but no thank you ma’am. I’m gonna have to leave.'”
That would have been the end of it, but one witness to the exchange posted the story on Facebook.
Micaela Shaw, who was sitting in a nearby booth, told the station ”I have a bunch of family members and friends who have been active military and in the military and retired and it hurts my feelings when people disrespect them.”
“I just wanted to stand up for him,” Shaw said.
On Facebook, negative reviews of the Nicholasville Waffle House piled up as Americans expressed their outrage.
Ethan Long, describing himself as a “dear friend” of Welch, wrote “Refusal to serve a Soldier in the U.S. Army?? You all are a disgrace, treasonous swine!! You spit in the face of what this country was founded on!”
The restaurant’s owner responded with a statement, “For many years we have had a ‘No Firearms’ policy in place in our restaurants. We continue to believe this is the best policy for the safety of our customers and associates.”
At least one former employee said she would have handled things differently.
“I used to work here… If this man had been in my section I would have served him with pride and paid for his meal myself,” wrote Amy Hicks.
Hicks summed it up: “You should be ashamed!”
