A Maine mayor has come up with a novel approach to the ever growing number of Americans on the public dole — publish the names of welfare recipients.

Saying enough is enough, Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald penned an op-ed explaining that he plans to push a name-and-shame bill requiring the state to publish the names, addresses and other details of “every individual on the dole,” according to Fox News.

The mayor said pensioners’ information is public record, so why should welfare recipients be treated differently?

“Our liberal, progressive legislators and their social-service allies have made them a victimized, protected class,” he wrote.

The controversial proposal landed Macdonald a spot on “Fox and Friends Weekend,” where he told host Tucker Carlson that he believes Maine residents have a right to know which of their neighbors they are supporting.

“This is born out of frustration,” Hizzoner said. “For three-and-a-half years, I’ve been putting all kinds of welfare laws, I’ve been submitting them, and the legislature is just tanking them.”

You might have guess already Macdonald is a Republican. But he’s a Republican in a city of about 36,000, where Democrats have a registration edge of about 10,000 Democrats to 4,000 Republicans. (There almost 9,000 independents.)

“I’m overwhelmingly elected by the people up there,” Macdonald said. “And this is what they’ve elected me for. And this is what I’m going to do as long as I’m there, is try to get some welfare reform.”
