Emmy opener’s Trump joke had social media cringing

Comedian Andy Samberg’s opening monologue at the Emmy Awards show Sunday consumed nearly nine minutes of sometimes painful television, with a shot at Donald Trump thrown in.  But was it funny?

Sticking to a theme of “diversity,” predictable Hollywood liberal politics didn’t always come off as comedy.

“Donald Trump, of course, is running for president, to the delight of uncles everywhere,” Samberg said, adding “But I’ve gotta say, sure, Donald Trump seems racist…. what else?”

Twitter users cringed.

The funniest line about the Republican front-runner might have come from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the “Veep” star who won the Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

Recalling a line from a speech on her show, “What a great honor it must be for you to honor me tonight,” she stopped herself. “Oh no wait, Donald Trump said that. It’s getting trickier and trickier to satirize this stuff.”
