Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump used social media Saturday to fire back at his critics, telling them he’s under no obligation — moral, legal or otherwise — to defend President Barack Obama.
Trump has been the target of a growing mountain of criticism — most notably from the White House, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and a growing list of pundits — for not correcting a man at a New Hampshire town hall meeting Thursday who accused Obama of being a Muslim foreign national.
Trump tweeted:
Am I morally obligated to defend the president every time somebody says something bad or controversial about him? I don’t think so!

This is the first time in my life that I have caused controversy by NOT saying something. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 19, 2015
If the shoe were on the other foot, would Obama defend Trump?
If someone made a nasty or controversial statement about me to the president, do you really think he would come to my rescue? No chance!

And if Trump had challenged the questioner at the town hall?
If I would have challenged the man, the media would have accused me of interfering with that man’s right of free speech. A no win situation! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 19, 2015
Trump supporters agreed — in droves. Here are but a few examples:

Judge Trump by a guy at his rally, but how dare you link Obama with the terrorist he palled around with who tried to blow up the Pentagon. — Razor (@hale_razor) September 19, 2015
There’s never a dull moment in the Trump campaign.
