Presidential contender Carly Fiorina was pure class Wednesday when Fox News’ Megyn Kelly gave her the chance to respond to crude remarks by Donald Trump in a magazine interview — remarks Trump maintained Thursday were taken out of context.
“Honestly, Megyn, I’m not going to spend a single cycle wondering what Donald Trump means,” Fiorina said during an interview on “The Kelly File.”
Fiorina was commenting on a lengthy Rolling Stone profile in which Trump had made fun of Fiorina’s looks.
“Look at that face!” Trump told Rolling Stone. “Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!”
“I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?”
Fiorina told Kelly that Trump’s comments speak for themselves, and that the “many, many thousands” of supporters helping her climb in the polls are indeed “very serious.”
At the end of the day though, Fiorina said she had no idea what Trump’s point was in the personal attack.
“But maybe, just maybe,”she added. “I’m getting under his skin a little bit, because I am climbing in the polls.”
Trump responded today on Fox & Friends, saying his comments in Rolling Stone were being misconstrued.
“I’m talking about persona. I’m not talking about looks,” Trump said. “Although when I get criticized about my hair… nobody does a story.
“The fact is, I probably did say something like that about Carly in a jocular manner,” he said. “She is at me constantly.”

The Trump-Fiorina feud made its way to Twitter where Trump’s comments continued the debate:
@JayCaruso Trump is such a jackass. @CarlyFiorina
— Amy Curtis (@moderncomments) September 9, 2015
@AmesMoreno @JayCaruso @CarlyFiorina Context? In what “context” would this statement be OK?
— Dan Tienes (@DTienes) September 9, 2015
Charming. RT @JayCaruso: Wow. This is what Trump has to say about @CarlyFiorina pic.twitter.com/UHEs4wnAuf

@JayCaruso @CarlyFiorina @jason_howerton Why is anyone surprised by anything he says? He’s the Archie Bunker of American politics.

@seanagnew @JayCaruso @CarlyFiorina My teenagers are literally too mature to make comments of this nature. Let’s elect an 8th grader!

Very classy for Trump to go after looks of Carly Fiorina, cancer-survivor. I appreciate him sticking to substance. https://t.co/uLhJzAcZxH

@EsotericCD Because Rolling Stone magazine would never make things up. They’re pillars of journalistic integrity … oooh wait! ?
— WriterMom4Trump (@niteowlmom3) September 10, 2015
Here’s at least one Trump supporter who’s growing weary of the personal attacks:
@EsotericCD @realDonaldTrump Sad if you said this! I’m on your team, NOT because of your looks. Unlearn this behavior and focus!

And S.E. Cupp feels it might be a boost for Fiorina:
I hope this @RollingStone Trump piece, in which he criticizes @CarlyFiorina‘s appearance, only helps her w/women. http://t.co/f7QM2pajpI
— S.E. Cupp (@secupp) September 9, 2015
Donald Trump’s comments on Carly Fiorina should tell you all you need to know about him and how he treats women , especially older women.
— Elizabeth West (@Limeylizzie) September 9, 2015
Let’s be honest. If you are a woman Trump won’t take you seriously unless you could compete in one of his beauty contests.
— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) September 9, 2015
But Trump supporters won’t be backing down any time soon:
@amandacarpenter @KatMcKinley y’all familiar with all the women who work for Trump, their titles and salary?
— Larry House (@larryhouse) September 10, 2015
@amandacarpenter Nice to see you have complete faith in Rolling Stone. I guess you believe they were correct about their UVA story.
