Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who continues to engage on multiple fronts in a war of words, saw Anthony Weiner fire a return salvo Tuesday in defense of his wife Huma Abedin.
At a Boston fundraiser last week, Trump called Weiner “one of the great sleazebags of our time,” and said it was likely Abedin shared classified information with her husband.
“So, Huma is getting classified secrets,” Trump said. “She’s married to Anthony Wiener, who’s a perv. No, he is! Do you think there’s even a 5 percent chance that she’s not telling Anthony Weiner … what the hell is coming across?”
Appearing Monday on “The Brian Lehrer Show” on radio, Weiner fired back, saying Trump’s allegations are “absurd” and reflect poorly on the candidate.
“I think it’s absurd and frankly insulting,” the disgraced former congressman said. “Not only to my wife, who, when she worked at the State Department, had a pretty high security clearance, a higher clearance than even some of the candidates running for president, but it also reflects very poorly on apparently what Mr. Trump thinks about government employees who have high security clearances, that they are talking about things.”
As Abedin did when her husband was forced out of office after being involved in a 2011 “sexting” scandal in which he sent sexually explicit material via social media, Weiner returned the favor by standing by his wife.
“Not only didn’t she do that [leak information], but even further, she worked in government for 20 years,” he said. “She’s got a reputation that is completely stellar, and anyone in Washington and anyone in New York who’s ever worked for her knows that.”
She also has a reputation for being fiercely loyal to Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton, who was the real target in Trump’s remarks last week.
Stay tuned. Knowing Trump as we do, he’s likely to have something to say about Weiner’s slight.
