Questions swirl around 5-year-old death of British codebreaker with possible ties to Clintons

Dead British spies in duffle bags and the king and queen of American corruption . . . these are the things conspiracy theories are made of.

The British tabloids are all abuzz about the 5-year-old unsolved death of a super-spook whose body was found folded into a padlocked duffle bag in his bathtub.  And now there’s speculation that Williams may have hacked into data of Bill and Hillary Clinton before his death.

Gareth Williams, 31, was a codebreaker for England’s vaunted MI6 intelligence agency at the time of his death in 2010.  On Sunday, The Sun reported that Williams had hacked into a computer system to obtain the guest list for an event Bill Clinton was attending as a favor for a friend.

“The Clinton diary hack came at a time when Williams’s work with America was of the most sensitive nature,” an unnamed source told The Sun. “It was a diplomatic nightmare for Sir John Sawers, the new director of MI6 at the time.”

With such a sensitive post, authorities have been mum on details, and conspiracy theories—none of them confirmed—abound.

An initial line of inquiry was that he was killed by a jealous lover. Yet there were no signs of forced entry to the flat.

In 2012, lawyers for his family said he could have been killed by someone who specialised in the “dark arts of the secret services”. The police did not rule out his intelligence work playing a part in his death.

They thought he may have been stuffed in the bag by killers who later broke back in to cover their tracks.

Investigators also suspect the flat had been “steam-cleaned”, which would explain why no DNA evidence was found.

The nature of Mr Williams’s work remains a secret, but sources claim he dealt with equipment that tracked the flow of cash from Russia to Europe. The technology let MI6 follow money trails from accounts in Russia to criminal gangs.

Scotland Yard ended its review of Williams’ death in 2013, saying it was more likely that he locked himself in the bag and suffocated.  Experts hired by Williams’ family dispute that claim, according to the tabloid: “even escapologist Harry Houdini would have struggled to lock himself in the bag.”

CNN reported that Bill Clinton earned $13.4 million in fees from 54 speaking events in 2011, while Hillary served as Secretary of State, using her personal, insecure email server to store the most sensitive details of her and her husband’s activities.  Between 2001 and 2012, Clinton earned over $89 million in paid speeches.

The sudden renewal of interest in the years-old case raises questions of exactly what data Williams hacked, and was that related to his death?  Authorities aren’t saying anything, but as questions swirl around the Clintons and their now-wiped servers, we may never learn the answer to this spy’s tragic and bizarre end.
