‘Eek!’ New video shows how easy it is for a rat to wiggle up your toilet pipe

RodentA new and icky video showing how easy it is for rats to get into a home is sweeping the Internet, and people are freaking out.

The video, posted by National Geographic on Friday, shows how these creepy critters can quickly and easily find access to your home through the plumbing in your bathroom.

According to the video, the rodents are extremely flexible and have great endurance. They are able to swim for three days if needed, and are able to hold their breath under water for three minutes.

“We think of rats as land animals,” the video explains. “But it turns out they’re expert swimmers. Rats paddle with their back legs while their front feet steer. Their tail also acts as a, kind of, rudder.”

Because rats’ ribs are hinged at the spine, they are able to squeeze through incredibly small gaps, some as small as a quarter, travellig through the pipes and out into your toilet.

According to the video, the rodents sneak into the sewer system through open manhole covers and then can get into the house using sharp claws to navigate residential plumbing pipes and into the toilet.

Frightening to think about the next time you have to sit on the john.
