Marco Rubio is urging Secretary of State John Kerry to demand freedom and respect for the Cuban people during an upcoming visit to Cuba. Kerry is traveling to Havana on Friday to raise the American flag over the newly reopened U.S. Embassy in Cuba. He will be the first secretary of state to visit the Communist island state since 1945. 2016 bill would ban businesses from firing gays – Members of the Florida Legislature are trying to make workplace discrimination against gay and transgendered workers illegal — for the seventh year in a row. The Competitive Workforce Act would make it illegal to fire someone based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Most cities and counties in South Florida already prohibit such firings, but statewide, they are still legal. Read more

Battle lines: Tensions flare as Florida lawmakers weigh new map – Florida lawmakers intensified their criticism of the Florida Supreme Court’s redistricting ruling Tuesday as a Republican congressman fought for his political survival and a Democratic congresswoman announced she would file a lawsuit Wednesday to keep her current district. Florida League of Women Voters targeting new campus concealed weapons bills – The League of Women Voters of Florida will start building a coalition Thursday to fight newly filed bills that would allow people to carry concealed weapons on college and university campuses. But Rep. Greg Steube, a Sarasota Republican who is sponsoring the House version of the bill, remains undeterred. The proposal, which would apply to people who have concealed-weapons licenses, failed to pass the Legislature during the 2015 session. Read more
