Call him Citizen George.
Former President George W. Bush proved Wednesday that even a guy who once enjoyed the trappings of the presidency must still fulfill the obligations of citizenship, showing up for jury duty as summoned at the George Allen Courts Building in Dallas, a spokesman told NBC News.
“He sat through the jury selection panel for a case in Judge Eric Moye’s court on the 14th civil district but — surprise! — was not picked to serve as a juror,” said Freddy Ford, Bush’s communications director, said.
While it’s debatable how good of a juror a former president might be – that Secret Service entourage would likely cramp any deliberations, and you just know he’d run hard to be elected foreman – there’s no denying the electrical effect W. had on his fellow participants in the justice system.
“He was very personable, very friendly, just ‘Hey, I’m here to serve.’ He asked questions and was very nice,” Dallas resident Sheri Coleman told the Dallas Morning News. “I loved it.”
Judging by the social media reaction, she wasn’t the only one.

@desiree_bryant There may have been men who were better Presidents, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a President who was a better man.

Dallas County Judge Staci Williams was so excited she got the former president’s name wrong.
At least my interns have fun! Pres. George Bush Jr. was at the courthouse today. Jury duty is required of all! pic.twitter.com/d3Y5Q6wmsE

@StaciWilliams8 I hope the news people get the president’s name correct unlike her honor! It’s George W. Bush…he’s not a Junior. Geez.

Even people who weren’t at the courthouse Wednesday drew a lesson from Bush’s presence.
@BraddJaffy @TedNesi @KristaNBC This answers the question “what do I have to do to not go”. Even a POTUS has to do it!

If this guy has to show up for jury duty, so do you. http://t.co/Myk6jFim67pic.twitter.com/FnIS2MBdtM

It’s tough to imagine the current occupant of the White House doing the same when he’s a private citizen again.
