An MSNBC panelist claimed that GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” is proof that his base of support is, by and large, racist.
The host of “Up with Steve Kornacki” threw out the premise Saturday that Trump’s supporters were decidedly one-toned.
“Older, white, more culturally conservative, maybe uneasy with these changes,” is the way Kornacki described them.
Former U.S. Rep. Nan Hayworth, a New York Republican, disagreed. She noted that a recent New Hampshire focus panel of Trump supporters included a young woman with a prominent tattoo.
Liberal political strategist Angela Rye posited that Trump is “tapping into white fear,” an element she claimed “exists in the Republican Party.”
Hayworth jumped in and said the fear is not based on color but America’s status in the world today versus what it was for most years following World War II.
“This is fundamentally what it is about,” she said.
When Kornacki brought up the Trump campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” Rye jumped in, claiming that when it was stripped to its essentials, it was all about race.
“It started with ‘Take Our Country Back’ in 2010, and that also had racial undertones,” she said.
