French women are furious after a “Muslim girl-gang” attacked a bikini-clad woman in a public park, igniting a multi-national protest — online and on the streets.

Five Muslim women have been arrested in Reims, France, in connection with the attack. The two youngest alleged assailants are 16 and 17 years old, the Daily Mail reported.

French police said the attackers live in “housing estates” with large Muslim populations, the Daily Mail reported, leading authorities to speculate that the attack was religiously motivated.

“We have to be very careful not to jump to conclusions,” Reims Mayor Arnaud Robinet said. “All the same, I can understand why people have assumed that this attack had religious motives. If that turns out to be the case, it is a very serious incident.”

The attack occurred Wednesday, when the bikini-clad woman was reportedly approached by the Muslims who condemned her for being “immoral” and exposing too much flesh.

The gang then punched and slapped the woman until a passerby was able to stop the attack, the Daily Mail reported.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, but the victim could not go to work the next day due to severe bruising.

Word of the assault spread throughout social media prompting French women to grab their favorite two-piece bathing suits and hit the streets, with cameras in hand.

The above tweet reads: “All women are free in their bodies, and no one can decide for them.”

Then the bikini protest got its own hashtag and took off beyond France:

And good luck with that in the U.S., too. American tweeters had some insight on the matter:

DON’T count on it.
