Suspected serial killer with ‘kill kit’ gets taken out by escort dubbed ‘hero hooker’

A West Virginia woman, an escort identified only as “Heather,” recounted a terrifying encounter she had this weekend with what police believe was a serial killer. She nearly became what may have been his next victim.

Neal Falls, 45, answered Heather’s online escort ad. When she answered the door at her Charleston home, he pointed a gun at her head, according to the CBS Evening News.

“Live or die” were his first words. Then he began choking her.

“When he strangled me, I grabbed my rake, and when he laid the gun down to get the rake out of my hands, I shot him,” Heather said. “I grabbed the gun and shot behind me.”

She ran out of the house after shooting Falls, and flagged down a neighbor who called 911. It’s when the police arrived that pieces about who Falls was started falling into place.

CBS reported:

Inside Falls’ car, detectives found a machete, axes, knives, a shovel, a sledgehammer, bleach, plastic trash bags, bulletproof vests, and four sets of handcuffs.

Now, police are investigating whether he could be connected to the murder or disappearance of nine women across three states: Ohio, Illinois, and Nevada.

Evidence found with dismembered bodies outside of Las Vegas, where Falls used to live, is similar to an item found in his car. And all the women were escorts, most of whom advertised online.

“It’s likely that Mr. Falls is a serial killer,” said Steve Cooper, Charleston Police Department Chief of Detectives. “I believe she saved lives by shooting Mr. Falls, based on what he did to her and based on the items found in his car.”

Police have ruled Heather’s shooting of Falls as an act of self-defense and are not charging her.

“I knew he was there to kill me,” Heather said.

Local police are entering Falls’ DNA information into a national database to see if he can be tied to any other crimes. They’ve also asked for assistance from the FBI.
