San Francisco was no “sanctuary city” for Kate Steinle. It was where she was murdered, allegedly by an illegal immigrant.
Rep. Trey Gowdy finds it abhorrent that cities like San Francisco should call themselves sanctuaries, or safe havens, for illegals, given that the very people government is supposed to protect are the ones put at risk.
The South Carolina Republican told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren Thursday that the number of other tragedies like Steinle’s “depends on how outraged our fellow citizens are.”
Van Susteren interviewed Gowdy after his House Judiciary Committee hearing on sanctuary cities. Before the interview, the House passed a measure that would withhold federal funding to jurisdictions offering sanctuary to immigrants living in the United States illegally.
“The president said that … in Trayvon Martin [a young African-American slain by a Neighborhood Watch volunteer in Florida] he saw a son. I can tell you those of us who have daughters saw our daughters in Kate Steinle,” he said.
He noted that President Barack Obama has two daughters and should reach out to to the Steinle family to tell them he grieves for them. It has been over three weeks since her murder.
“Then, secondarily, to understand the primary focus of government is public safety,” Gowdy said. “And it wouldn’t take much to secure the border … make detainers mandatory. Make them mandatory like they were during the Bush administration. She’d still be alive if we’d done that.”
While San Francisco is taking steps to cancel its sanctuary policy, Obama indicated he would veto any legislation that would withhold federal funds from sanctuary cities.
