Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump says Americans should boycott Mexico.
“I’m not going to Mexico, and I don’t think anybody from this country [should],” Trump said on the Rita Cosby radio show, according to the New York Post.
“I think we should boycott Mexico, frankly.”
Right out of the gate of his presidential announcement, Trump bashed illegal immigrants, especially those from the United States’ neighbor to the south, as criminals. But this latest statement is based on what he sees as a corrupt Mexican government and court system.
“I have a judgment for a million dollars in Mexico. I can’t collect it because the court system is so bad,” Trump said.
Although the real estate tycoon continues to be excoriated for characterizing Mexican illegal immigrants as drug-runners and rapists, it doesn’t seem to hurt his standing in the presidential race. The latest Fox News poll puts him in the lead among GOP candidates, followed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
On another front, the New York businessman showed his soft side and his non-free-market side.
“I want healthcare for everyone,” Trump said, sounding more like President Barack Obama. “We have to take care of people that really can’t take care of themselves.
“You can say that’s not a conservative way,” he acknowledged. “Well, if it’s not, that’s going to be a problem for me. But I don’t think it will be.”
The interview will air Sunday on WABC.
