Ex-Reagan aide sees parallels with Trump; GOP establishment hated the Gipper, too!

Jeffrey LordA former aide to president Ronald Reagan sees a parallel between the man he worked for and 2016 Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump — establishment Republicans mocked them both.

Appearing on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” Jeffrey Lord, an associate political director in the Reagan White House,  said moderate Republicans said many of the same things about Reagan that they are now saying about Trump.

“I’ve gone back and looked. These were precisely the kind of things that were said about Ronald Reagan,” Lord said before citing examples. “This is old news and moderates in the Republican Party have been saying this for decades and they said it all about Ronald Reagan and, you know, we know what happened.”

Republican strategist and CNN commentator Ana Navarro jumped in and said that Reagan had experience as he was the governor of California and that “comparing Donald Trump to Ronald Reagan should be considered a sacrilege for any Republican.” She called Trump a “carnival barker who offers no solution.”

Lord fired back that Trump’s experience in building a global mega corporation is valuable experience and shouldn’t be dismissed.

“He has done a lot more than a lot of governors have done,” Lord said. “The notion that this experience is somehow irrelevant or makes him a clown is just, frankly I think, bizarre.”
