Cemetery worker pleads guilty to stealing veterans’ headstones to use as flooring.

Kevin MaynardA Rhode Island veterans cemetery employee has agreed to plead guilty to stealing the headstones of veterans and using them as flooring in his home after co-workers reported the thefts to state police.

According to WPRI, a VA special agent and a state police detective spoke to Kevin Maynard, who had been employed by the cemetery for about 11 years, after his co-workers reported him.

Maynard admitted to taking “about 40” gravestones but federal prosecutors said that number is now “at least 150,” the station reported.

According to WPRI, the affidavit states Maynard “bragged” about stealing the headstones even though he knew proper procedure was to grind up damaged grave markers that are scheduled for replacement to protect the dignity of the deceased.

According to WPRI that the gravestones, and replacement gravestones, are provided free of charge to the families of the deceased veterans by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Federal prosecutors said Maynard will plead guilty to one count of theft of government property and prosecutors will recommend a sentence of one year probation and at least 500 hours of community service, WPRI reported.
