Woman climbs state flagpole, removes Confederate battle flag before getting arrested

It was a flagging effort, you might say.

A woman engaged in an epic exercise in futility Saturday by climbing the flagpole at the South Carolina state Capitol and removing the Confederate battle flag before being arrested and having the flag raised again.

Brittany Ann Byuarium (Bree) Newsome climbed the pole in the early morning with the help of a harness as officers shouted at her to come down, event organizer Tamika Lewis told the New York Daily News.

“You cannot get to me with hatred and oppression and violence,” Newsome yelled from the top of the pole while gripping the flag. “I come to do this in the name of God. This flag comes down today.”

She was partly correct. It came down temporarily before being raised again about an hour later.

Fellow protester James Tyson helped Newsome off the flagpole before both were arrested and charged with defacing a monument, according to WLTX.

“We didn’t see fit to have the flag stand erect while the people who were massacred were laid to rest under it,” Lewis told the Daily News.

“It’s really hurtful and a bit disgraceful,” she said of the flag’s being re-raised.

Activist and filmmaker Michael Moore promised to pay for Newsome’s bail in a tweet Saturday, and the hashtag #FreeBree was the top trend on the social media website.
