A Sean Hannity guest on Wednesday placed the roots of slavery and racism — including the much-maligned Confederate flag — squarely where it belongs — in the lap of the Democratic Party.
“The idea that Republicans can have the Confederate flag hung around their necks is ridiculous,” conservative author and political commentator Mark Steyn said on Fox News’ “Hannity. “
“It’s a Democrat flag. The states that seceded during the Civil War were all Democrat states, that’s their flag,” he said. “The slave states were Democrat states, the racist states until the 1960’s were Democrat states.”
Since last week’s mass murder of nine worshippers at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church, the Confederate flag has come under attack by the left, with much of the finger-pointing directed at Republicans, especially South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
But that’s not where the blame belongs, Steyn said.
“The Democratic Party was the largest and most powerful institution supporting slavery in the English speaking world,” he said.
But Democrats find it difficult to accept their history.
“The Democratic Party has never come to terms with the evil of its past,” he said.
“The idea it was a party committed to the proposition that one human being could own another human being,” Steyn said. “And they never said a word about that. They never apologized for it.”
It’s about time they did.
