The reception disgraced news anchor Brian Williams receives when he moves to MSNBC may be a bit frosty.
Less than three years ago his new co-workers were chanting “f**k Brian Williams!” at an office Christmas party, according to the New York Post.
Williams ruffled a lot of feathers when he called cable news programming “partisan ranting” during a segment of a show he previously hosted. And people who’ve been criticized have long memories in television.
Williams made the assessment in September 2012 on his short-lived program “Rock Center,” when, with correspondent Ted Koppel, he ran a two-part segment on cable news. He began one of the segments by stating that, according to Koppel, cable news is “corrosive and does nothing to help compromise in this country.”
And it didn’t stop there.
“Has any of this splashed up against what we do?” Williams asked Koppel.
“What works about cable television is it’s cheap and it makes a ton of money,” Koppel said. “There is nothing cheaper than a bunch of talking heads. The people who hire those talking heads have discovered the more irascible, the more partisan, the nastier they are, the bigger an audience.”
MSNBC anchors refused to be a part of the series, although other big television names like Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Bill Maher and David Carr were interviewed.
“The rank and file at MSNBC were furious at Brian,” a source told the Post. “They hated it so much, they were still mad about it months later at the office Christmas party.” That’s where some cheered “F - - k Brian Williams” — “It was like a rallying cry.”
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, however, claimed last week on the air that she believes in “second chances” and that she was “really happy” that Williams would be joining the cable network.
She added, however, that “it is quite possible that I’m causing some schpilkas [extreme nervousness] somewhere in this building because I’m talking about this.”
Williams was removed from the anchor spot of NBC “Nightly News” for telling a series of outright on-air fabrications.
Lester Holt, who had been standing in for Williams, will permanently take over the anchor position.
