It looks like retail giant Wal-Mart caved to pressure from CNN to remove all of their merchandise brandishing the Confederate flag – a decision that that has Lynyrd Skynyrd fans piping mad.
Wal-Mart’s change comes after South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced she supports removing the flag from capitol state grounds. Haley’s decision was made in the wake of last week’s massacre that took the lives of nine innocent churchgoers in a historic black church in Charleston.
CNN admits it inquired about Wal-Mart’s practice to carry the merchandise both in its stores and online, and the network didn’t stop at just one retail giant as its website states:
Walmart’s statement came in response to a CNN inquiry Monday. In addition to Walmart, CNN asked Amazon and eBay whether they would remove Confederate flag merchandise from their sites. Neither company responded to repeated requests for comment.
Sears Holdings Corporation, the owner of Kmart and Sears, also said Monday it would stop selling confederate flag merchandise online. It does not currently sell confederate flags at its stores.
The decision by Wal-Mart to halt all Confederate flag merchandise raised the eyebrows of Southern rock-loving fans everywhere. After all, what would a down-home Southern BBQ be without the summer anthems of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird?”
Lynyrd Skynyrd fans will likely have to get creative to purchase their CDs – and judging from social media response, they’re not too happy about it.

@mj_lee @CNN There are going to be MANY upset Southerners. To most of them flag represents patriotism and not racism.

@mj_lee @CNN and it will NEVER be enough. the demands will just keep coming. this is RIDICULOUS!

Wait. Walmart is going to pull all Lynyrd Skynyrd albums? Really? https://t.co/9iQ1Cg9SVf

Ironically, Lynyrd Skynyrd was hired to play a concert for Wal-Mart employees and stockholders earlier this month. A fact not lost on Twitter.

Guess it’s time for Hollywood to go back & edit out all references to Skynyrd. Looking at you, “Con Air,” “Sweet Home Ala.,” and “Kingsman.”
