George W. Bush misses being commander in chief.
In an interview published Friday, the former president said that’s the only thing he misses now that he no longer holds the office of chief executive.
“There is only one thing that I really miss about being president, and that’s being the commander in chief,” he told Israel Hayom, a daily newspaper that has the largest circulation in Israel. “I admire our military a lot.”
Bush spoke of the special relationship he developed with the men and women of the armed forces.
“When you are the commander in chief at a time when I was, when you put them into a lot of combat situations, you develop a special bond not only with the military but with their families,” he said, adding, “I would salute men and women in uniform on a daily basis.”
That reverence was evident every time he addressed a military gathering — and it was always returned.
He continues his commitment and dedication to the military by holding an annual 100-kilometer mountain bike ride with selected wounded warriors. His fifth such event took place in April.
“Some of the people we ride with have come back home with an injury that’s treatable, but an injury that makes it really hard for them to see a positive moment … A lot of programs in the country are dedicated to helping these warriors become the productive citizens we know they can be,” Bush told Fox News medical correspondent Dr. Marc Siegel at this year’s W100K.
“They’re injured and yet they refuse to allow their injury to consign them to a dull, meaningless life,” he added.
Wartime strategy is an issue that came up recently with the current commander in chief, who acknowledged that he hasn’t worked out a strategy for dealing with Islamic State terrorists.
“We don’t yet have a complete strategy because it requires commitments on the party of the Iraqis, as well as about how recruitment takes place, how that training takes place,” President Barack Obama said earlier this week at the G7 conference in Germany. “The details of that are not worked out.”
Bush was asked about his own wartime strategy.
“My strategy, the Bush doctrine, was to vigorously pursue those who do us harm and bring them to justice,” he replied.
