A Southern California community showed the nation how Americans should welcome home a fallen hero — with patriotism, with respect and as a family.
Townspeople gathered Wednesday all along the 70-mile route from San Diego to Murrietta, waving flags and displaying banners to honor Marine Sgt. Eric Seaman on his final journey home.
Seaman was one of six Camp Pendleton, Calif.-based Marines and two Nepalese who were killed in a helicopter crash while engaged in a humanitarian mission after the April earthquake in Nepal that took hundreds of lives and left thousands stranded, homeless and without food.
Law enforcement officers, firefighters and civilians alike openly shed tears for the 30-year-old father of two as they took up their vigil on almost every highway overpass along the route. Thousands more awaited his arrival in Murrietta, Seaman’s hometown and final resting place.
“I’m just here to welcome my uncle home,” Hope McCormick told KCBS-TV, fighting tears. “Not the way we intended to, but he’s finally home.”
