Talk about a rude awakening.
A Chicago-area zoo said it has “taken prompt action” against a black employee after her Facebook post about “rude ass white people” went viral.
The woman, who goes by the name Shana “Poohpooh” Latrice, was working at the Brookfield Zoo when she posted a photo to Facebook with the quote “Wassup y’all? At work serving these rude ass white people.”
A zoo customer posted the photo to the Brookfield Zoo’s Facebook page calling it “extremely racist.”
The post then went viral, gaining more than 6,000 shares, and prompting the zoo to take action Tuesday, according to its Facebook page.
Yesterday, we became aware of the actions of a single employee which we agree are unacceptable. This employee’s statements in social media are in violation of our policies and do not reflect our institution’s values. We have zero tolerance for these kinds of divisive behaviors. We treat all employment matters confidentially but please know that we took prompt action to remedy the situation this morning.
We hope you continue to hold Brookfield Zoo in high regard and not let the actions of one individual overshadow the longstanding good work of the Chicago Zoological Society.
The employee posted another message on Facebook after the uproar that read, “I know what I am & racist is not one of em.”
A Facebook group has since been created to support the employee called “I stand with Shana Poohpooh Latrice”
The group says its purpose “is to decry the violent and racist upheavel [sic] of one of Brookfield Zoo’s finest employees! Shame on Brookfield Zoo! Shana Poohpooh Latrice, we stand with you!”
