Retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters offered an elegant, brutally simple solution to five Taliban commanders released from Guantanamo Bay by President Obama a year ago who will be free to return to a life of terrorism in Afghanistan within hours.
“Kill ‘em,” he said.
The outspoken Fox News strategic analyst delivered the assessment on “Fox & Friends Weekend” Sunday, when asked what he would do about the five terrorists who were exchanged for accused Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl on May 31, 2014.
As part of the deal, the men were to remain in Qatar, under “surveillance” for one year.
After playing a clip of White House spokesman Josh Earnest delivering his typical Obama administration double-speak (“we will take all the necessary steps to protect the American people”), Peters offered one step that would take care of a lot of things.
“We track’ em, then wherever they turn up, we kill ‘em,” he told co-hosts Anna Kooiman and Peter Johnson Jr. “There’s no part of the deal that says we can’t kill them after they leave Qatar.”
And while Peters said the men are likely to return to the battlefield, the greatest risk the five pose is their public relations value.
“They’re now living martyrs,” he said. “Freed from Gitmo through the courage of Islamist terrorists.”
He added that the lopsided deal will make it especially difficult for U.S. troops and foreign service personnel remaining in Afghanistan.
The logic being, that if the U.S. will hand over “five senior Taliban warriors in exchange for one American deserter, what will they give us for an American general or diplomat?” he said.
Peters observed that terrorism has spiked under President Obama’s watch, resulting in huge national security problems, “and the Bergdahl 5 are just one small part of it.”
