With military bases on their highest level of security since the 10th anniversary of 9/11, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel told a local Fox affiliate this week that military personnel, veterans and their families are being advised to “keep a low profile” and not to “be so pompous about being in the military.”
“The 440,000 veterans that live in the area have heard through one way or another from the commanders at MacDill to pay attention, keep a low profile, don’t be so pompous about being in the military, because those guy are looking for possible targets,” retired Col. EJ Otero told Fox 13 in Tampa, Fla.
According to Fox 13, the FBI raised the terror alert level at nearby MacDill Air Force Base and all other military bases in the United States in response to threats from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The threat level was a direct response to the May 3 terrorist attack on the “Draw Muhammad” cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, the station reported.
After that attack, where police killed the two terrorists, an Internet posting claiming to come from ISIS announced that it has members in 15 states, awaiting orders to carry out additional operations.
“Out of the 71 trained soldiers 23 have signed up for missions like Sunday, we are increasing in number,” the statement warned.
The authenticity of the post has not been verified.
Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson commented Sunday on the possibility of similar attacks.
“The so-called ‘lone wolf’ could strike at any moment,” Johnson said on ABC’s “This Week,” although he attempted to downplay the significance of that remark.
“It is a new environment, but we are not discouraging Americans from doing the things they do on a daily basis,” he added.
Either way, the warning to vets to lay low is eerily reminiscent of British soldiers being told not to wear their uniforms in public after a member of the military was murdered in the street by Muslim radicals, as noted by Breitbart News reporter John Hayward.
When the day comes that a member of the U.S. military cannot proudly wear his uniform in America, or a veteran boast of his service to this nation, we’ll know that the terrorists have won.
