Amtrak TRAIN WRECK kills at least 5; photos, video of chaotic scene

An Amtrak train wreck in Philadelphia late Tuesday left at least five dead and a “disastrous mess” of mangled metal, injured people and rescue workers working feverishly to get survivors to safety .

The cause of the derailment was unknown, The Associated Press reported. But rescue efforts and the aftermath of the crash were captured by numerous cell phones among passengers inside the train and witnesses on the ground.

Former Rep. Pat Murphy, a Pennsylvania Democrat, was among those on board Train 188 headed from Washington to New York. It carried more than 240 passengers and crew.

Outside the train, the scene was chaos.  More than 140 people — six of them critically injured — were treated at area hospitals, The Associated Press reported.

One passenger, Daniel Wetrin, was taken to a nearby elementary school.

“I think the fact that I walked off (the train) kind of made it even more surreal because a lot of people didn’t walk off,” he said, according to The AP.

“I walked off as if, like, I was in a movie. There were people standing around, people with bloody faces. There were people, chairs, tables mangled about in the compartment … power cables all buckled down as you stepped off the train.”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said it would be at least a week before Amtrak would be running service through the city, according to The AP.

News cameras captured the scene from above.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash Wednesday morning, AP reported.
