After taking heat for promoting a “White Appreciation Day,” a Hispanic-owned Colorado barbecue joint was evacuated Friday night because of a bomb scare.
Several social media posts threatened Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ in Milliken, right in the middle of its dinner rush, forcing the restaurant to close for several hours, co-owner Edgar Antillon told The Washington Times.
Antillon said threats aimed at him and his partner, Miguel Jiminez, had steadily escalated in the days leading up to the bomb scare.
“It’s been phone calls, it’s been emails, it’s been on social media,” Antillon told the Times. “Some are just, ‘Hey, you’re an idiot,’ and others have been legit threats. The former owners of this establishment are receiving threats even though they have nothing to do with this thing. It’s unfortunate.”
The owners announced on Twitter that on June 11, white customers would get a 10 percent discount. But after getting flak, the restaurant expanded the discount to everyone the next day.
“It’s like we’ve said many times before, if a black person comes in here and says, ‘Hey, what about my discount?’ they’re going to get a discount,” Antillon said. “If a Mexican comes in here and says, ‘I want a discount,’ they’re going to get a discount. Nobody’s going to be turned down for anything.”
The owners came up with the idea to honor a class of people who are typically ignored in ethnic appreciation months.
“We have a whole month for Black History Month,” Antillon told Denver’s News9 when the controversy first erupted. “We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans.”
Jiminez and Antillon, both of whom are of Mexican heritage, bought the restaurant just last month.
It’s been an interesting week for the two restaurateurs.
