A CNN videographer captured something appalling at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
While the band played the national anthem during the opening ceremony, he panned the camera around the room, catching everyone standing solemnly at attention with their right hand over their heart.
And then the cameraman zeroed in on one woman, intently texting on her smartphone, oblivious to what was going on around her.
A Twitter storm began immediately. She was scolded for her lack of respect:

Once she was busted, the woman identifying herself as Helena Andrews, followed the lead of most shamed politicians; Andrews lied and got snarky.
It was then that Americans really unloaded on her:
Apparently someone saw me on TV “texting” during the dinner. FTR I was taking notes. On my phone. Because it’s 2015. #WHCD

@helena_andrews Have respect and wait 3 minutes to take ‘notes’. People died for you.

@helena_andrews We’re all well aware of the year. Respect for the National Anthem is timeless.

@helena_andrews and to think I fight for your freedom. Everyone who’s replied to this is right. You show no respect and are a nobody

@helena_andrews as if that is any more excusable than texting? Were you writing down the words of the song before you forgot them? Come on.

@helena_andrews There are those that defend this county and are moved to their soul by that song every time it plays!

@helena_andrews You’re lying, besides you respect our country when the National Anthem is played. Nice try I’m sure the POTUS & FLOTUS blv u

@helena_andrews That’s BS and you know it. Cowards give excuses, responsible adults own up to their mistakes. Which one are you?
