The Johns Hopkins University student government has banned Chick-fil-A from its campus, quashing a proposal to ask the restaurant chain to open a new location there.
Student government leaders say welcoming a Chick-fil-A restaurant on campus would amount to “micro-aggression” against gays because of the restaurant owners’ opposition to gay marriage, Fox News reported.
“Prospective and current students, staff, faculty and other visitors who are members of the LGBT community would be subjected to the microaggression of supporting current or future Chick-fil-A development plans,” a resolution passed Tuesday by the student government said.
The restaurant chain is not being accused of discrimination in its hiring or serving practices. But the owners’ traditional values — views espoused by Barack Obama in 2008 – appear to be so offensive that student leaders would block the sale of chicken on school premises.
Instead of the “free exchange of ideas” you’d expect on a college campus, Johns Hopkins students have “an increasing intolerance towards students who have a religious or socially conservative point of view,” student Andrew Guernsey told Fox News legal analyst Peter Johnson Jr.
“It seems that colleges and universities value diversity in everything but thought,” Guernsey, a Johns Hopkins junior, said in quoting a recent George Will column.
The university recently banned a pro-life club on campus, Guernsey added, and although Johns Hopkins is considered a world-class medical school, university officials tried to ban a “fetal model table” that depicted what fetuses look like at various stages of development.
Johns Hopkins is one of the most celebrated institutions of higher education in the world, and students from all backgrounds and nations vie for the chance to get in. Those students may arrive with differing views, but it sounds like the university wants them all to leave as liberal clones.
