Veteran attorneys see possible criminal probe for Clintons based on new book

Each time former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faces ugly accusations – whether it’s over her personal email server, unilateral destruction of emails or, now, a possible money-for-favors scheme — the Clinton team’s response is to “show me the evidence.”

Two veteran Washington, D.C., lawyers say there’s certainly enough smoke to warrant an in-depth investigation.

The latest Clinton woes come courtesy of right-leaning investigative reporter Peter Schweizer’s new book, “Clinton Cash,” which accused Bill and Hillary Clinton and their Clinton Foundation of a flurry of conflict-of-interest problems.

The book also raised issues about Hillary Clinton’s actions during her tenure as secretary of state.

One deal, which purportedly netted Bill Clinton a $500,000 speaking engagement and substantial donations to the family foundation, involved an agreement approved by the State Department that led to Russia acquiring 20 percent of America’s uranium output.

“There’s certainly smoke there,” Washington, D.C., lawyer Caleb Burns told Fox News. “The question’s going to be whether or not she took any official action in exchange for those donations. If she did, I think there is going to be a high, high likelihood of additional scrutiny, either from Capitol Hill or from the Department of Justice itself.”

Earlier this week, 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney told radio host Hugh Hewitt that Clinton’s actions smacked of bribery. Burns agreed.

“If the facts suggest that there was a linkage between what Secretary Clinton did in her official capacity and the money that was coming into the Clinton Foundation, this would fall under 18 U.S.C. 201 as a potential bribery violation,” Burns said.

Former White House counsel C. Boyden Gray, who served under President George H.W. Bush, told Fox News that any Clinton cash linked to the uranium deal creates, at a minimum, the appearance of a conflict of interest, especially “when one of them is in office and money is coming in, in connection with issues over which that person in office has jurisdiction and responsibility.”

“[Hillary Clinton is] not protected by the fact that her husband may have taken money,” Gray added. “Spouses’ interests are attributed to each other, and that is no excuse or defense.”

The Clintons have been plagued by scandal for a long time. Bill Clinton was the first president to be impeached in more than a century, and Hillary Clinton was the only first lady to have testified before a grand jury.
