Gay activists are calling for boycotts against two New York gay businessmen, just because they threw a party for GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz.
Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass, who made their fortunes in real estate by marketing vacation properties to the LGBT community, hosted a “fireside chat” at their Manhattan penthouse, with the U.S. senator from Texas discussing foreign policy and Israel with about a dozen guests.
When the New York Times published a story about the reception, activists responded on social media, calling for a boycott of the two men’s businesses.
At the reception, which was not a fundraiser, Cruz briefly discussed gay marriage, which he has strongly opposed.
Cruz said he would not love his daughters any differently if one of them was gay, the Times reported. He added that marriage is an issue that should be left to the states.
A Facebook page titled “Boycott Fire Island Pines Establishments & Out NYC Hotel,” was created just hours after the Times article hit the Internet, and had 6,100 followers by Saturday morning. Gay activists used the page to post angry messages about Reisner and Weiderpass.
“Weiderpass, an out gay man, held an ‘intimate reception’ this week for Senator Cruz,” one commenter said. “The question, among so many others, is, WHY???!!!”
Other posts called the two men “Uncle Toms,” encouraging people to write Yelp reviews critical of the men’s businesses, or to “shut these people down.” Many suggested that Reisner and Weiderpass have placed their own financial concerns above the interests of the LGBT community.
Apparently, that’s a cardinal sin to many gay activists, who insist that gays must toe their political line, and they don’t tolerate dissent. One Facebook commenter wrote:
The focus since Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass invited Ted Cruz into their home has been on Cruz’s opposition to marriage equality. But Ted Cruz stands opposed to nearly everything I care about. He opposes even the most basic civil rights protections for LGBT people. While he said he’d love a lesbian daughter (in theory), he’d treat her as a second class citizen and would not respect her fundamental humanity. In addition to being anti-gay, he’s also anti-choice, anti-immigrant, and he subscribes to a fundamentalist Biblical world view. He’s a theocrat. He denies climate change. The NRA gave him an A+ on their scorecard. He’s made outrageously false statements about President Obama, including calling him “an apologist for radical Islamic terrorists.” Ted Cruz is a right-wing fanatic of frightening proportions. Lending ANY kind of support or legitimacy to his candidacy for president is, in my book, unconscionable.
The vitriol was not limited to Facebook. Broadway Cares cancelled its AIDS fundraiser because it was to be held at the New York City club 42West, which is owned by Reisner and Weiderpass.
Conservatives took to Twitter to expose the hypocrisy and intolerance, saying:
Who would have guessed. Ted Cruz more tolerant than @BCEFA #UniteBlue #NOH8 #OneLove

It’s as if @BCEFA is just a bunch of Democratic shills using gay issues as a cover or something. https://t.co/bgHeI1QAtp — Instapundit.com (@instapundit) April 24, 2015
.@BCEFA This isn’t at all about “standing up for the community” and you know it. Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining.

@redsteeze @BCEFA wants to force a Christian to cater to gays. Yet, Gay men are forbidden to hold a reception for a Christian. #HYPOCRISY — Daisy4Cruz (@CCSunnyDay) April 24, 2015
Gay men have dinner with Ted Cruz. Gay community punishes them https://t.co/dmYTsyeh9S

Shorter @BCEFA: Those two gay guys have Conservative Cooties. #Progressives — Drew McCoy (@DrewMTips) April 24, 2015
So leftists want conservatives to reach out and connect with gay people, so Ted Cruz does that, and the leftists boycott his gay hosts? OK!

See, on the one hand there’s AIDS, a terrible illness. But on the other hand, this guy we don’t like spoke to people we do. So, AIDS loses. — Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) April 24, 2015
– Sorry, we didn’t raise any money this year to find a cure for AIDS. We had to cancel the fundraiser. – Why? – Because eww, Ted Cruz.

Shame on you, @BCEFA I’ve always thought of You as a solid A.I.D.S. Charity. Now I realize it was just a front. #BroadwayCares — BiasedGirl (@BiasedGirl) April 25, 2015
