Ted Cruz blisters Senate GOP majority in attorney general vote; ‘she will continue Eric Holder’s lawlessness’

The United States Senate voted Thursday to confirm the nomination of New York federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch as attorney general of the United States, but only after Sen. Ted Cruz delivered a passionate speech asking fellow Republicans to stop the nomination in its tracks.

The confirmation came after an extended delay caused by Democrats’ entrenched fealty to the abortion lobby and its opposition to a human trafficking bill that Republicans insisted on passing before taking up the Lynch vote. That bill was finally settled Wednesday.

It also came after Cruz’s 10-minute oration, which was built around his questioning of Lynch during her confirmation hearings last fall, but ranged much further afield. Lynch’s answers during those hearings confirmed she will continue the patterns of conduct already established by Attorney General Eric Holder, Cruz said.

“Eric Holder has abused the office and turned it in many respects into a partisan arm of the Democratic Party,” Cruz said on the Senate floor Thursday. “She chose to embrace the lawlessness of Eric Holder’s Justice Department.”

But Cruz, a candidate for the Republican nomination for president, had particular fire for his fellow Republicans in the Senate.

“A particular onus falls on the new Republican majority,” Cruz said. “The Republican majority, if it so chose, could defeat this nomination.”

But Cruz knew his words would not sway enough of his colleagues to prevent Lynch from taking office. After voting in a doomed procedural vote to keep the final Lynch vote from the floor, he left the chamber for a fundraiser in Texas, according to the New York Times.

Ten Republicans voted to approve her. One of them was Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
