In what will surely be seen as another tactic in the Obama administration’s war on women, and a blow to Twitter comedy, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf has been passed over for promotion to the department’s top press spot.
And a white guy is getting the job!
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Rear Adm. John Kirby will be retiring from his Navy post to become the State Department’s new spokesman, becoming the official replacement for Jen Psaki, the other half of the Lucy and Ethyl act that has been the Obama administration’s official face of United States diplomacy for the past two years.
Secretary of State John Kerry chose Kirby to replace Psaki — who got kicked upstairs last month to become White House communications director, based “his deep experience and knowledge of international issues and the fact that he is widely seen as a non-political face,” AP reported.
Suffice it to say no one has ever accused Harf of either having a deep knowledge of international issues or being non-political.
Indeed, Harf’s sophomoric naiveté – “we can’t kill our way out of this war” – was part of her charm, and possibly her biggest asset on the hopelessly naïve Obama administration’s foreign policy team.
So the white, career military man is taking over to try to give a patina of maturity to a State Department that seems in over its head on every front. For anyone who thinks that’s a good sign, here’s the kicker:
Harf could still remain in charge of State Department communications for American negotiations over Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
It’s only the country’s biggest foreign policy challenge of the moment – besides that pesky Islamic State jayvee team young Marie doesn’t seem to think we should be killing – so it’s all in good hands.
The Twitter world, where Harf is a perennial target, got a kick out of the news.

Some leaped to the conclusion her being passed over was the same as being fired. That would mean some kind of personal responsibility, though, and that’s not how the Obama White House rolls.
