Religious hatreds run so deep in the Middle East that Christian refugees are at a risk of being murdered for their faith even by Muslims who are sharing boats to escape.
A group of Muslim migrants fleeing to Italy from Libya were arrested by Palermo police Thursday for the murder of 12 Christians they allegedly threw from a rubber boat on April 14, according to The Associated Press.

The 12 migrants from Nigeria and Ghana were said to have declared their Christianity while on the arduous trip and reportedly paid for it with their lives when they were pushed overboard by 15 Muslims from the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali and Guinea Bissau.
Italian authorities released a statement saying the “15 were accused of multiple homicide aggravated by religious hatred,” the AP reported.
The statement said the remaining Christians were able to save themselves by forming a “human chain” to resist the assault.
The news comes after a series of reported deaths that have occurred between the Libyan coast and Europe as an “unprecedented wave” of migrants is making their way toward safer territory.
