Republicans better get ready, because the “war on women” narrative has started already and the mainstream media is leading the charge.
Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul appeared on several Sunday talk shows and found himself having to defend the perception that he doesn’t like being challenged by women in light of his contentious interview with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie last week.
On “Meet The Press” NBC’s Chuck Todd questioned Paul about his vexed interviews, including the one with Guthrie, and asked the senator if he thought he had to “grow a thicker skin.”
“Most of my profession has been as a doctor and so if you ask me a questions and it’s about your eyes or about, you know, a pain you’ve got here, I try to be very direct with the answer,” Paul said.
“I don’t like it, and I sometimes have a hard time hiding that I don’t like it, when a lot of the question is built up into ‘well you’ve changed opinion, you’ve changed opinion,’ and I guess this is your opinion ‘at least for now,’” he lamented. “That kind of ticked me off as sort of — that’s snide.”
Paul hinted that other people, including his wife, have advised him to gain his composure before he answers.
On CNN Dana Bash asked Paul, more directly, if he would have to be less aggressive with a female opponent like Hillary Clinton. That in-and-of itself could be deemed a sexist question, if Paul was not a Republican
“What about if you’re on the stage with Hillary Clinton?” she asked. “Would you be cognizant of the fact that she would be a female opponent?”
Paul responded that he is, and would continue to be, polite in a debate.
“I would treat her with the same respect that I would treat a man, but I wouldn’t lay down and say ‘Oh I’m not going to respond,’” he said.
“That would be a sexist sort of response, to say, ‘Oh, my goodness, she deserves not to be treated as aggressively because she’s only a woman.’ I would never say that about anybody. And I don’t come into our interview thinking, ‘OK, it’s a woman-versus-a man kind of interview.’ I just think she has tough questions, he will ask tough questions, I’ve got to be prepared.”
