Sharpton fires back at reports that Scott family rejected him

Al Sharpton is calling a report “bogus” that says he was shunned from another black high-profile funeral.

The family of Michael Scott, the unarmed black man who was shot dead while fleeing from former North Charleston, S.C. police Officer Michael Slager, did not want Rev. Al Sharpton coming to town according to The New York Daily News.

A source close to the family told the Daily News, “We don’t want another Ferguson type of circus here,” referencing the riots that occurred after the shooting death of Michael Brown by former Officer Darren Wilson.

But the civil rights rabble-rouser said in a statement on Friday that the News’ report was wrong.

“Today’s Daily News story is bogus and has no merit,” Sharpton wrote. “I have been invited to preach in North Charleston, SC, on Sunday and to help lead a healing prayer vigil that afternoon by local clergy who have worked on this case from the beginning.

“There has never been a discussion about me attending or participating in the funeral on Saturday, since everyone knows that (National Action Network’s) convention with thousands of delegates is happening in New York and doesn’t end until Saturday night,” he added. “In fact every major civil rights organization leaders will join me on Saturday morning for a press conference.”

In the statement Sharpton said he has been invited to preach in the town Saturday but has yet to decide if he will go.

“I have not decided whether or not I will accept the invitation to preach in North Charleston and participate in the prayer vigil on Sunday,” Sharpton said. “However, I am told the mayor and police chief have said that if I do choose to come they will attend the service as we seek healing and justice in these matters.”

The Twitterverse jumped on the Rev’s announcement to tell him what they think of him.
