So much for the fighting Wolverines.
The University of Michigan has cancelled a screening of the blockbuster movie “American Sniper” because it made some students feel “unsafe,” according to The College Fix.
“The movie ‘American Sniper’ not only tolerates but promotes anti-Muslim … rhetoric and sympathizes with a mass killer,” said an online letter circulated among Muslim students and others.Source: New York Post
That “mass killer” would be U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, an American hero who served four combat tours in Iraq and was awarded two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars with Valor.
But the students were just getting started in denigrating Kyle, who was killed along with friend Chad Littlefield while helping a fellow vet suffering from PTSD.
“Chris Kyle was a racist who took a disturbing stance on murdering Iraqi civilians,” the letter said.
The students added that watching the movie “is provocative and unsafe” to Muslim students and said the university “should not participate in further perpetuating these negative and misleading stereotypes.”
The University of Michigan appeared to agree that showing the film was “harmful.”
“While our intent was to show a film, the impact of the content was harmful, and made students feel unsafe and unwelcomed at our program,” the Center for Campus Involvement said in a statement.
“We deeply regret causing harm to members of our community, and appreciate the thoughtful feedback provided to us by students and staff alike.”
In place of “American Sniper,” the school will show “Paddington Bear,” a PG-rated movie about a stuffed animal’s misadventures, according to The College Fix.
The “delicate snowflakes,” as one social media user described the students, should be quite pleased with themselves– they now get to have a nap and play with their dolls.
Here is a sampling of responses as seen on Twitter:
