Ben Carson faults hip-hop for dismissing Jesus, deterioration of black communities

Potential Republican presidential contender Dr. Ben Carson didn’t hold back on faith or conservatism when interviewed Sunday on a popular radio station that caters to the black community.

Carson who is known for his candor, accused hip-hop of destroying the lessons of faith and family when he spoke on WBLS, a New York-based station that touts itself as “The No. 1 source for R&B.”

“We need to reestablish faith in our communities and the values and principles that got us through slavery, that got us through Jim Crow, and segregation, and all kinds of horrible things that were heaped upon us,” Carson said, according to Business Insider.

“Why were we able to get through those?” he asked.

“Because of our faith, because of our values, and as we allow the hip-hop community to destroy those things for us, and as we grasp onto what’s politically correct and not what is incorrect, we continue to deteriorate.”

Naturally, Carson’s statement was met with resistance, both from callers and from the show’s host.

The WBLS host told Carson that using the term “hip-hop made his antennae go up.” He said people have been making that argument about music for decades and used the example of rock ‘n’ roll and R&B back in the ’50’s.

Carson clarified his statement.

“When I talk about the hip-hop community, I’m talking about the aspect of modern society that pretty much dismisses anything that has to do with Jesus Christ, that’s what I’m talking about,” Carson said.

Carson is currently campaigning across the country and is expected to officially announce in May if he will be running for the 2016 presidential office.
