‘Finally, some justice being done’: Comrades Bergdahl abandoned speak out

Were it not for the conviction of the brave men who served alongside Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl when he walked away from his post in Afghanistan, the Obama administration might have gotten away with their ill-advised trade of five top level Taliban commanders for the alleged deserter.

As it is, there will be few repercussions, but at least these men can take solace knowing Bergdahl will answer for his actions.

“Finally, some justice being done,” former Army Sgt. Josh Korder said Wednesday on CNN.

Korder served with Bergdahl and you’d be hard pressed to miss the sense of betrayal he feels about one of their own abandoning the unit.

When asked by CNN host John Berman for his thoughts on a possible sentence, Korder said Bergdahl should not be forgiven or get off with time served — a reference to the 5 years Bergdahl was in Taliban custody.

“His actions put him there,” he said.

As for betrayal, Korder was asked about President Obama’s Rose Garden news conference with Bergdahl’s parents, and National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s comment that Bergdahl “served the United States with honor and distinction.”

“I was shocked,” he said. “Obviously, that’s why we all kind of reacted in the way that we did to try to get the news out there right after that Rose Garden announcement.”

It’s a shameful episode in American history that soldiers who served on the front lines find themselves in the unenviable position of having to counter the president of the United States to ensure the truth gets out, but social media users recognized their courageous actions.

Here’s a sampling of responses as seen on Twitter:
