‘Guns welcome’: 2nd Amendment-supporting attorney pays bonuses to clerks who carry

An Iowa lawyer is giving his employees a monthly bonus if they simply acquire a concealed carry permit and actually use it. And he’s been doing it for more than four years.

“Well, I really like gun rights,” Eric Puryear, of Puryear Law in Davenport, Iowa told WQAD News 8. “I think they’re a basic human right. I think so many bad things wouldn’t happen to people if they were armed for self-defense.”/

And his avocation is evident to anyone entering his office, from the “guns welcome” sign in the lobby to the numerous books on firearms in his office.,

“I think it’s an important constitutional right. It’s right up there with voting and free speech,” Puryear told the station.

“I feel strongly about those, too. I don’t think anybody disagrees with voting rights or free speech rights, and so I guess gun rights is an area where there’s just more to be said.”

Because he’s a National Rifle Association-certified instructor, Puryear makes it easy for his employees to get properly trained and licensed.

Paralegal Elizabeth Payne took advantage of her boss’s offer, and now keeps a handgun in her desk carries it with her when she’s out.

In addition to receiving an extra $50 in her pay envelope each month, she gets peace of mind.

“I never do not have it with me,” she told WQAD.

“I definitely feel much safer carrying it, knowing that if something were to happen to me, I like have a way to protect myself.”
