Michelle Obama got me fired: Univision host says FLOTUS intervened after ‘Planet of the Apes’ joke

A host for the Spanish language television station Univision who was fired for making what was deemed to be a racist comment about Michelle Obama is blaming the first lady for his termination, according to TMZ.

The controversy started when the host of “ El Gordo Y La Flacaa,” Rodner Figueroa, told a makeup artist that transformed himself into Michelle Obama he looked like a cast member of “Planet of the Apes.”

Figueroa’s representatives said no one from the network expressed concerns about the statement until he received a call from a network executive later that night telling him the first lady’s office called to complain, TMZ reported.

The host wrote an open letter apologizing to Obama for the remark.

“I want to clarify that I’m not racist and in no way was my comment directed at you, but rather the work of the artist, which left much to be desired,” Figueroa wrote.

“I come from a family bi-racial America, with family, like my father, Afro-Latin race,” he added. “I am the first openly gay Hispanic TV presenter and I’ve been an activist for causes in favor of minorities, as I have been discriminated against. I voted openly twice by her husband, Barack Obama, because I consider it a great man who respects minorities, like me, in this country.

That wasn’t enough to save his job however and Univision released a statement of its own to announce his firing.

“Yesterday during our entertainment program “El Gordo y La Flaca” Rodner Figueroa made comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision’s values or views,” the statement said. “As a result, Mr. Figueroa was immediately terminated.”
