Parent calls 911 when school refuses to release child from Common Core-type testing

It took a call to 911 for a Florida mother who did not want her daughter participating in the state’s new standardized testing to persuade an elementary school to release her child.

The woman showed up at Winter Park’s Brookshire Elementary School on Tuesday to opt her fifth grade daughter out of the written section of the Florida Standards Assessments, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

(Florida Standards Assessments is a somewhat modified version of the Common Core national standards initiative, according to the newspaper.)

Shari Bobinski, a district spokesman, told the Sentinel that the school was hesitant to release the child because the testing had been underway for 20 minutes when the parent arrived.

The Sentinel reported that the distraught parent approached Jacqui Myers, who was outside the school to offer support to parents wanting to opt their children out of the testing — Myers, the parent of a first-grader at Brookshire, is active in the local opt-out movement.

“They’re not giving me my child, can you help?” the woman asked Myers.

Myers said she called 911 on the woman’s behalf, according to the Sentinel.

A school resource officer for the Winter Park Police Department responded, and the principal eventually released the girl to her mother.

According to Myers, the principal sent parents an email beforehand explaining it would be disruptive to release students during testing and that it would not be allowed — Florida law says that participation in standardized testing is mandatory.

And even though Brookshire Elementary initially held the student, Bobinski said the district does not do so.

“We do not hold children if parents come to pick them up,” she said.
