Go nuclear? Democrats need to start being ‘adult,’ top Republican tells ‘Meet the Press’

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy thinks it might be time to go nuclear, saying the Senate should change the rules to require a simple-majority vote to pass funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

Though McCarthy believes the term is a misnomer.

“I don’t think it’s going nuclear when you have 57 percent of the Senate [that] voted for the Collins amendment that would take away the president’s action,” McCarthy said of a proposal by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, to allow President Obama’s Dreamer’s Act to take effect but repeal his executive order to provide quasi-amnesty for up to 5 million illegals.

“That’s not nuclear when 57 percent of the American representation says it’s wrong,” he added. “That’s not in the Constitution. I think they should change the rule.”

McCarthy wants to see members of Congress work together to “fix their differences” in resolving the Homeland Security funding issue.

“I will tell you, as the majority leader in the House, I will be in that room and help solve that problem,” he said. “We took up legislation five weeks ago so we did not have a cliff. If there’s somebody who’s not being an adult, it’s the Democrats.”
