Islamic State militants’ promise to conquer Rome as the first stop in a new global campaign of terror didn’t get quite the response they were expecting.
Instead of spreading fear, they heard laughter.
The boast came in a video depicting the group’s mass beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christian migrant workers in Libya, according to The Washington Post.
“Today, we are south of Rome,” one of the masked terrorists said. “We will conquer Rome with Allah’s permission.”
Although “Rome” is sometimes used to describe the entire Western world, many observers noted that the ancient city is only about 600 miles north of Tripoli.
So some Twitter users offered Islamic State a little friendly travel advice, throwing its hashtag, #We_Are_Coming_O_Rome, in its face in the process. Here are a few examples:
