Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson to receive special honor at CPAC

Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson is set to be honored at this years Conservative Political Action Conference with a free speech award.

The “Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award,” being bestowed on a man the left loves to hate, is being presented by an organization it despises even more, Citizens United.

The announcement comes 14 months after Robertson made remarks perceived by many as being homophobic.

“Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God,” Robertson said in a December 2013 GQ Magazine interview. “Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

An indefinite suspension followed after a media backlash and a push from the gay rights organization GLAAD, which said A&E and show sponsors needed to “re-examine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.”

The move backfired on A&E when Robertson’s family threatened to walk, causing the network to bring Robertson back so its highest-rated show would continue.

“Even when the entire mainstream media demanded he disavow his beliefs and attempted to have him fired from his own hit show for expressing these beliefs, he stood firm in his faith,” David Bossie, Citizens United president, said Tuesday.

“I want to thank Citizens United and Breitbart for this award,” Robertson said. “When one does not have the freedom to speak out loud and anywhere what one believes, freedom is dead.”

The award was created by Citizens United in association with the Breitbart News Network and its first winner was Mark Levin in 2014.

“Who would have thought that a show about family, guns, and God could become one of the most popular in cable history?” Alex Marlow, Breitbart News editor-in-chief, asked. “Andrew Breitbart did, actually. He believed that there is a huge market for entertainment focused on American and Judeo-Christian values. The success of ‘Duck Dynasty’ vindicates him, so it’s fitting that Mr. Robertson is the recipient of this year’s Breitbart award.”
