Boehner tells Fox why he invited Netanyahu to Congress; and why he’s not backing down

Speaker John Boehner all but acknowledged Sunday that he intentionally kept the White House in the dark on his invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before Congress, saying his actions were necessary because of the “animosity” the Obama administration has toward Netanyahu.

Boehner expressed no remorse about the decision in an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” telling host Chris Wallace that he didn’t want the White House “getting in the way.”

“I wanted to make sure there was no interference,” the Ohio Republican said. “There’s no secret here in Washington about the animosity that this White House has for Prime Minister Netanyahu. I frankly didn’t want them getting in the way and quashing what I thought was a real opportunity.”

Wallace pointed out the controversy behind Boehner’s invitation, but the speaker did not bite when asked if the relationship between the United States and Israel should be outside of politics.

“I’m glad that he’s coming, and I’m looking forward to what he has to say,” Boehner replied.
