During a fiery debate with Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo shouted “our rights do not come from God!”
He was talking about those rights embodied in the Bill of Rights — the first 10 amendments of the Constitution — which are offshoots of the “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” clause of the Declaration of Independence.
“Our rights do not come from God, your honor, and you know that. They come from man,” Cuomo blurted out during the heated exchange. “That’s your faith, that’s my faith, but that’s not our country. Our laws come from collective agreement and compromise.”
Cuomo’s mixing apples with oranges. Laws come from “collective agreement and compromise” and vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
Rights are universal and come from God or, if you’d like, from the natural order of things.
If Cuomo wants to argue the point further, I suggest he take it up with Thomas Jefferson. I guarantee he’ll lose that debate.
