Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings has been criticized for calling Texas a “crazy state” during an open House committee hearing earlier this week, but he stood by his remarks in a CNN telephone interview Thursday.

Hastings made his “crazy state” remark during a House Rules Committee hearing, adding that he wouldn’t live in the Lone Star State “for all the tea in China.”

When Texas Republican Michael C. Burgess challenged Hastings, the Floridian said Burgess could wait until “hell freezes over” for an apology.

In a recent CNN interview with Dana Bash, Hastings cited examples of outdated local Texas ordinances as the reason for its craziness including one limiting the number and size of “dildos” a woman may have in her possession.

“And if that ain’t crazy, I don’t know what is,” he told CNN’s congressional correspondent.

But he also took a shot at his own state.

“I have cautioned about living in Florida and when I retire I’m not sure I’m going to stay there,” he added.

Hastings, a former federal district judge, left the bench in disgrace when he was impeached.
