Michell Malkin calls out NBC’s Brian Williams: ‘Arrogant fabulist’ full of ‘bloviating BS’

This was a mainstream media moment of truth.

collagewilliamsmalking0205newThe fallout continued Thursday from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams confession Wednesday night that he’d fabricated an emotional story about being aboard a chopper that was shot down during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

But the stark difference in how the Williams story was covered made the bias of the country’s most influential news outlet embarrassingly clear.

The Washington Post, no friend of conservatives generally, played the story of a media institution admitting to lying repeatedly about an aspect of his journalism career as a major story, with coverage that implicated the entire NBC network.

The nation’s ostensible “newspaper of record,” The New York Times, however, barely found it worthy of mention, with a nine-paragraph story that started like this.

The NBC News anchor Brian Williams apologized Wednesday for mistakenly claiming he had been on a helicopter that was shot down by ground fire in Iraq in 2003.

He mistakenly claimed he was on a helicopter that was shot down? This isn’t like he picked up someone else’s takeout at the Chinese place. He said he was on a helicopter that was downed during a military invasion.

The Times story even notes that Williams had told the same story in “specific detail” on “Late Night With David Letterman” in 2013. (The same place Michelle Obama told the true version of her run-in with a “racist” at Target, oddly enough.)

That’s a lot of “mistakenly” claiming.

Does anyone think for a minute that Sean Hannity would be cut the same slack?

Meanwhile, as is often the case, conservative columnist Michelle Malkin hit the nail right on the head. In a column, Malkin called Williams as an “arrogant fabulist” and described a lecture he gave at New York University’s journalism school in 2007, extolling the credibility of “real” journalists (like himself) and putting down bloggers.

Malkin concluded:

And if you work at NBC News, you can get away with bloviating a bullshit story about coming under fire for 12 years while America’s real heroes took bullets for you. And then, because you’re a Real Journalist, you can keep lying about it while using soldiers as your alibi. Because Real Journalism. Excuse me while I throw up all over my modem and bathrobe.

Malkin’s disgust had plenty of company.

That was the moment of truth.
